CHRISTCHURCH For the first time, Christchurch diocese has three episcopal vicars. Bishop Barry Jones has appointed Fr Rick Loughnan as vicar general, succeeding Msgr Gerry OConnor. Fr John Fitzmaurice has been named vicar for education and Fr Simon Eccleton vicar for marriage, the latter both for terms of five years.
This is the bishop looking at the way he wants to exercise his role, and develop his pastoral oversight in marriage and education, said Fr Loughnan.
Each diocesan bishop must appoint a vicar general to act in his name. Episcopal vicars are appointed where required in a role relating to certain diocesan areas.
On behalf of Bishop Jones, Fr Eccleton will promote the vocation of marriage and Fr Fitzmaurice can take initiatives to enhance and protect the handing on of the Catholic Faith through education.
At a diocesan gathering, Msgr OConnor was thanked by diocesan financial administrator Paddy Beban for his untiring support, particularly for three years after Bishop John Cunneen had a stroke.
What we witnessed was a man of humour, a man of humility, a man of experience and wisdom and a man of God, said Mr Beban.
Bishop Barry Joness secretary, Angela Woolstencroft, said Msgr OConnors amazing wisdom, counsel and patience at that time was something she would never forget.
Msgr OConnor, a member of the council of priests and assistant priest in Greymouth, said the family atmosphere in which professional teamwork is carried out in the diocesan office had been vital.
The new appointments took effect from February 1.
