Weekday Mass attendees at St Mary’s church Whanganui — Te Parihi Katorika Ki Whanganui marked the birth date of Venerable Suzanne Aubert (184 years ago) with Mass on June 19.

Parishioners were involved in the ministries at the Mass and the liturgy concluded with listening to Fr Chris Skinner, SM’s song “With our Mother Suzanne” and with the reading of Eileen Duggan’s poem “A tribute to Mother Suzanne”.

“I believe that Mother Aubert was no social worker, but rather she was a Jesus worker. She worked for Jesus, she worked for the Church,” said Fr Nathaniel Brazil, the presider.

A shared lunch was enjoyed at the home of Sr Luciana Puleosi, DOLC, followed by watching a DVD about Suzanne Aubert.

Undoubtedly St Mary’s most treasured parishioner, Venerable Suzanne Aubert arrived in settler Whanganui in 1883 from Hawke’s Bay, to begin 16 years of work that was mainly in the Jerusalem area.

When coming to town on business, she would often visit the original Whanganui Catholic church, which was then situated in main street Victoria Avenue.
