Auckland Bishop Patrick Dunn announced that James van Schie is to be the new general manager of Auckland diocese.

Bishop Dunn made the announcement just before Christmas. The previous general manager, Mariette van Ryn, finished in August last year.

Mr van Schie has spent the last two and a half years as executive officer for the New Zealand Catholic Bishops Conference in Wellington, and immediately prior to that was director of parish support and development for the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney.

The Sydney role saw Mr van Schie working as part of the archdiocese chancery team, providing support and advice on finance, administration, planning and operational matters across the 136 parishes in Sydney.

Previously, Mr van Schie was part of Sydney’s organising team for World Youth Day 2008, where he oversaw key organisational and communications projects. Prior to that, he worked for Macquarie Bank. He has also worked in New Zealand for the Wellington-based youth and family services organisation, Challenge 2000, as well as for the Medical Council of New Zealand. He joined the Challenge 2000 Trust Board in 2017.

Bishop Dunn said in a statement that he was delighted to announce Mr van Schie’s appointment as Auckland diocese general manager.

“James brings a good mix of business and management skills, along with a strong sense of mission and personal commitment to the work of the Church.  “I know you will join me in welcoming James to the diocese, along with his wife, Hannah, and their three young children, Mary, Patrick and John (who was born last month – November).”

Bishop Dunn thanked the Auckland diocese lead team “and especially to those members of the finance and property teams who have worked so effectively during the period we have not had a general manager”.

Mr van Schie, who has a Bachelor of Business from the University of Technology Sydney, starts in his new role in Auckland on March 4.
