Kiwi priest gets PNG OBE

Fr Philip Gibbs, SVD, who was ordained in New Zealand in 1978, was awarded an OBE in the Papua New Guinea Queen’s Birthday Honours. According to Hamilton Bishop Stephen Lowe, writing on Facebook, Fr Gibbs received the award for service to the Enga province community and to the Catholic Church.

He has been a priest in Papua New Guinea for 40 years apart from a six year period when he studied for a licentiate and then a doctorate in theology at the Gregorian University in Rome.

A professor at Divine Word University in Papua New Guinea, his research interests include social concerns in Melanesia, HIV and AIDS in Papua New Guinea, contextual theologies in the Pacific region and mission studies.
