Recently, while Bishop Patrick Dunn was visiting St Joseph’s parish in Helensville for the celebrations marking 100 years since the arrival of the first parish priest, the bishop was able to present Benemerenti Medals to John and Terri Smith.

The Smiths are long time and very active parishioners.

Mr Smith’s great grandfather arrived in Helensville in 1880 and was a great benefactor to the parish.

Mr Smith, a former pupil of St Dominic’s School, has spent much of his life in Helensville. He married Terri at St Patrick’s Cathedral on May 17, 1969.

For many years, Mr Smith has been on many committees in the parish, and he has been the parish council chairman.

The couple has organised the Christmas Seniors’ Luncheon for the past 10 years.
