Pupils at St Pius X Catholic School in Glen Innes in East Auckland
“learned” from home for two days last month, as the school shifted into brand new buildings on the same site.

The new buildings were a planned rebuild at the school, at which the existing structures had become very dated.

A beautiful carved pou gifted to the school was placed at the new entrance to the site.

According to a notice sent out by principal Paul Coakley, the pou was created by Samoan master carver Tuailevaoola Pio’ Timu, helped by Mr Esekielu, father and grandfather of many past pupils.

Mr Coakley called the pou “a stunning monument for our school”.

“As well as including the emblem of the Holy Faith Sisters and our establishment date of 1958, there are also many cultural designs that reflect the Pasifika families that have formed such an important part of our history,” he wrote.

An official blessing ceremony for the new buildings is planned for early next year, NZ Catholic understands.
