BEIJING (CWN) — A Chinese think-tank with close ties to the government has called for a change in the country’s brutal “one-child” policy.
“China has paid a huge political and social cost for the policy, as it has resulted in social conflict, high administrative costs and led indirectly to a long-term gender imbalance at birth,” acknowledged the report from the China Development Research Foundation.
Basing its analysis purely on political and economic factors rather than human-rights concerns, the group recommended adopting a “two-child” policy this year, and abolishing all statutory limits on family size by the year 2020.
The think-tank’s full report is not yet available to the public, but the recommendations were covered prominently by the state-backed Xinhua news agency.
