Guidelines for sending content

The following advice is taken from notes NZ Catholic newspaper sends its correspondents. It may help anyone sending material for publication.

NZ Catholic has a strong emphasis on national news (from each of the six dioceses). Reports should be kept short and succinct (usually under 300 words). Reports of meetings and speeches in boring detail are not wanted. Instead, we want to keep Catholic readers informed on what is happening in the Church and community, and what is significant, in a factual and succinct way. Correspondents should keep in mind readers in other parts of the country — e.g., a report from Invercargill should interest a reader in Whangarei. Human interest angles are welcome.

NZ Catholic is published fortnightly (publication dates) but two or three pages are completed each day, so the earlier we receive material the better chance it has of being published.

Be accurate with names, dates, etc. Don't let your personal opinions intrude into news reports. Just give the facts and let readers form their own opinions. Every statement of opinion, whether in quotation marks or not, should be clearly attributed to the person who made it.

Good pictures, preferably involving people doing something, are always welcome, especially if they help to tell the story. These can be photographic prints or in digital format (tif format preferred, or jpg). Digital pictures must have high resolution (preferably 300 dots per inch). If you wish to send us digital pictures via email, please let us know in your story submission using the email form above, and we will reply with an address you can send the files to.

We seldom publish New Zealand-written stories about overseas subjects or events (we already receive 20 times as much material from overseas news services as we can publish). Because NZ Catholic's emphasis is on covering news, there are few opportunities to publish short stories or poems.

Finally, but most important, before you send us anything, read it over through the eyes of someone who is unfamiliar with the subject. It will be time well spent.

If you would like to send a story in, please use the form above.
